Infrastructure and logistics

Strategy analysis in Logistics, SA (2004/5)

  • Developed and coordinated the first National State of Logistics Survey in South Africa, with specific focus on industry analysis, small business logistics and views on the future of logistics. The survey provided annual benchmark information for the national logistics industry over a period of 10 years.
  • Described the status of agro-logistics, and developed a baseline for strategy development for logistics in agriculture.
  • Analysed the role of various elements of the national logistics system in the supply chains of selected export industries, and made recommendations for future investment to streamline the national logistics system.

Logistics research, SA, (2005 to present)

  • Conducted research to determine the cost of logistics across various sectors
  • Conducted research to describe the FMCG logistics sector, and to identify opportunities for new entrants.
  • Analysed international agricultural supply chains for provision of high-quality food products to a client in the Middle East.

Decision modelling in logistics, SA (2004, 2015 to 2016, 2018 to present)

  • Design of decision models to inform strategic decision making for the development of Agri-parks (CSIR, SA Department of Rural Development and Land Reform). Models were based on my research of agro-processing value chains across the borders of the South African Customs Union, to identify logistics and supply chain-related barriers to trade facilitation, and to develop policy recommendations to enable trade.
  • Researched the challenges of businesses operating in rural environments and defined appropriate policy response. Differentiated businesses based on access to resources (resource-rich and resource-poor) and proximity to economic activity (urban and rural).
  • Supervised simulation model development for transport of petrochemical products.
  • Assessment of value chains, and identification of opportunities for improvement, from a district municipality perspective

Decision modelling in engineering

Provided advice for model conceptualization of a discrete-event (Excel-based) simulation model of the Dish power infrastructure, with the aim of developing and assessing availability requirements.
